This is probably the longest beach left in the Upper Harbor, and a good example of what the original shoreline must once have looked like: a curving stretch of gray-white sand that stretches some 5000 feet north from the condos and canals at Port Liberte. Officially, it's a part of Liberty State Park, but when I visited in 2005 there was no regular means of upland access¡Xone would either have to cross the new Liberty National Golf Course (seen here under construction in July of that year) or jump the railing on the waterfront esplanade at Port Liberte. I understand that¡¦s changed now, and there is some kind of trail from Port Liberte. Water access is difficult, especially at low tide, when already shallow water gives way to vast mud flats that extend several hundred yards out from the beach (see lower photo). There's a boat ramp just to the north, across the channel that separates the beach from the main part of Liberty State Park. Know more about this beach? Email us at info@newyorkharborbeaches.org |
