An illuminated 150-foot wheel is among the attractions being planned for Golden Gate Park’s 150th anniversary in 2020, giving visitors sweeping views from the ocean to downtown San Francisco.
San Francisco's Golden Gate Park will turn 150 this year and the city is planning year-long celebrations for the milestone birthday. Welcoming 24 million guests each year, it's one of the city's greatest attractions; the green lung that birthed the Summer of Love movement and is home to bison, museums and the Japanese Tea Garden.
One of the many attractions planned for the celebrations is the 150-foot wheel, a foot for every year the park's been around. Opening on 4 April and running until 1 March in the Golden Gate Park's Music Concourse – the outdoor plaza near the de Young Museum and California Academy of Sciences – the wheel will feature 36 climate-controlled gondolas that fit six passengers each. The 12-minute ride will be £14 ($18), or £9 ($12) for seniors and children under 13.

Throughout the year, more than 150 cultural institutions and community groups will come together to pay tribute to the park and the list of upcoming events and celebrations will soon be revealed on a dedicated Golden Gate Park anniversary website.
"Golden Gate Park is a San Francisco treasure and a place where everybody can enjoy the best that the city has to offer," said San Francisco Mayor Breed. "We want to celebrate the park and give people a new way to appreciate the beauty of our city during this 150th-anniversary celebration. This observation wheel is just the first of many exciting announcements we will be sharing in the coming months as we get ready for the coming year-long celebration."
